The Mississippi Bar encourages all attorneys to commit at least 20 hours a year to pro bono services toward indigent clients. I was fortunate to be able to attend two "free" legal clinics over the last two weeks. One was an expungement clinic and one was a will clinic.
The expungement clinic was held in Canton at the WIN Jobs Center. The Mississippi Association for Justice-New Lawyers Division and the Mission First Legal Aid Office hosted the event. We were able to help clients that qualified for expungement of their criminal conviction and/or arrest records. |

You had your day in court. You don't do so well, and the judge finds you guilty. Is that the end? Not necessarily. Under our system of laws, we allow for a review of the decision or in some cases a new trial altogether. This will focus on appeals from our lowest, but not least significant, criminal courts: Justice (Sheriff and Highway Patrol) and Municipal (City Police.) Okay, you were found guilty. The judge heard both sides (no jury) and has found in favor of the state. Where do you go from here?

If you operate an LLC in the State of Mississippi, you might want to ensure that your LLC has not been administratively dissolved. The Revised Mississippi Limited Liability Act of 2010 requires all LLCs to be registered with the Secretary of State and to file an Annual Report. If no Annual Report is filed, will be dissolved. This change in the law helps make sure all businesses operating as LLCs remain current and up to date. This helps protect the public by ensuring bona fide companies serve the people of Mississippi. |

It is the last day of 2012. Tonight will be a time for many to celebrate and party. For many of us, drinks will be part of the celebratory events, many away from home. Plans must be made to not drive home after consuming too much alcohol. Have a Designated Driver. Call a taxi. Even take advantage Safe Kids which will provide a free ride home in the Jackson Metro area.
However, some will choose to drive and may get arrested. If you know of someone who is arrested for driving under the influence, have them call us for legal representation. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone needs their legal rights protected.

It is that time of year again, the holiday season. It is time for fun, festivities, parties, family gatherings, and many more ways to celebrate. Many times alcoholic beverages are part of the celebration tradition, and rightfully so. What we all need to remember is that while there is nothing wrong with drinking and celebrating, drinking and driving is not good. The time is now, in advance, to ensure you have a plan in place to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or anything affecting your sobriety. |
